Good question! This is the hardest part of being a researcher AND an engineer. Asking the right questions, figuring out what the problems are, so that a solution can be researched.

My research is partly funded by Rolls-Royce engines, and we work together to find areas inside the jet engine that can be improved with a better understanding of the fundamental physics – like aerodynamics, thermodynamics, etc.

So in engineering research, it helps to work with companies who actually make products to find topics to research, that would help improve the world in some way!
